VI. Network Security Measures and Countermeasures

To manage the network vulnerabilities which identified before, we need to set up our network security. The main purpose of providing network security is to keep the data confidentiality of the network, network integrity, and availability of the network to be used. Building our network’s security doesn’t mean totally eliminate all possible threats that may harm our network. Network security just minimizes the possibility of such threats to occur. Additionally, we can’t build our network security just by setting up one firewall and leave it to take care of the entire network’s security problems; it’s definitely not like that. Building our network security means that we need to set multi security devices and software which work in a coordination with each other in order to provide a well protected network.

We can start to set up our network’s security by considering our network’s vulnerabilities. So, here are some things we will do to build our network security:

1. Physical Security
2. Access Control
3. Operating System Security
4. Virus Protection
5. Internet Security

V. Network and Internet Vulnerabilities

In this part, I will identify the Internet and network vulnerabilities of my small office network design. While, the prevention and the security measures needed to manage these vulnerabilities will be explained in the next part (part VI) about the network security measures and countermeasures.

Network vulnerabilities refer to the various threats that have chance to harm our network. Some threats may just cause minor effects which disturb our network’s function, while another threat may cause a serious damage to our network. So, in order to prevent these threats from harming our small office network, firstly, we need to know what our network’s vulnerabilities are, and also what kind of network enemies that we are up against.

Our network’s threats may come from two different sources:

1. Threats from the Internal Office
a. Disasters
b. Office’s staff
2. Threats from the Internet
a. Hacker
b. Virus and Trojan Horse

IV. Network Parts and Devices Explanation

In this part, I will give an explanation for every parts and devices that we can see in my network diagram. As we can see in the diagram, my network design has some parts and devices, the switch, Desktop PCs, Server, Printer, Fax machine, Router, Firewall, DSL modem, category 5 UTP cable, and Internet. And here is the explanation for each of them.

a) Switch

Switch is a networking device that acts as the central connection point in my network design. It works in physical and data link layer of the OSI model. Every computer in this network has a direct link to the switch. The switch itself enables communication between computers or network devices that connected to it.

In the old times, a network with star topology use a hub as the central connection point. But nowadays, switches have replaced the hub in most networks. (Wikipedia, 2007). Although a hub and a switch has the same basic function in joining computers and network devices in a star topology, but there is a slight difference between them in their way to handle data traffic in the network. If we use a hub, Click here to read the full post…

III. My Small Office Network Overview
Here, I will give a general overview about my Small Office Network design.
Firstly, it is a 10Base-T Ethernet Network that operates on 10Mbps for its bandwidth, use star topology and UTP cabling. My network design is aimed for an office that needs the network to do some light to moderate computing activity such as general office administration activity, database processing, some Internet activity, etc., so this network is not designed to carry out a very heavy workload such as video processing, video and audio streaming or 3D graphic rendering that need a great computing and networking power as its main workload. But for some time we still can use this network to do some heavy work. When the business grows and need for greater networking performance, the network will just need some minor modification to support the developing office’s needs, because the technology used in this network is chosen with an eye towards developing technology and higher performance demand in the future.
Secondly, my network is using guided media, as we can see in my network diagram above, or we can say in another word, this is a wired network. So, this network is designated for an office with an environment that is fairly easy for cable installation. This kind of office may have the network installed just in few nearby rooms that makes it easier for us to run the network cables across the network. The cable used in this network is category 5 UTP (Un-shielded Twisted Pair) cable which use RJ-45 connectors (“RJ” stands for Registered Jack). More information about this cable will be discussed later.
More on, this network has an Internet connection. It uses the high speed DSL internet connection. Click here to read the full post…

C1006 Computer Networks Term 3 2007 Assignment – part 1

January 25th, 2009

Hi! This is my C1006 Computer Networks assignment that I do in Term 3, 2007, in Informatics Computer School Singapore. How is the new assignment looks like? Do you have any questions? just ask me and I will try to help you.

The Question:
You have to design a small office network with less than 10 desktop computers. You have to link all the computers to a network printer and fax. For each part of the network, as shown in your diagram, write a few paragraphs describing the part. If you choose a workgroup or client-server environment, then you have to explain in your report. Your company Internet uses a high speed DSL Internet connection. You also have to explain the vulnerabilities and security measures in your network and Internet. Lastly tabulate the cost of the network.
Notes :
The diagram must show the computers, Internet connection, and physical layer items (e.g. wires, hub, router, firewall etc, if appropriate). The diagram should be an original drawing done by you using computer drawing such as PowerPoint (although you can use clip art and real pictures of components as part of the diagram if you wish).
